Kashgar (Kashi) is situated in the southwest of Xinjiang. From the west, this is the first point of arrival on land routes from Pakistan and Kirgyzistan.  For a long time a vital stop on the Silk Road, this remote city some 4,000 km from Beijing, used to take up to six months to reach from the capital! This all changed in the 1930s when Kashgar became a crucial meeting point for three empires- the Chinese, the British and the Soviet Union. A haven for spies and housing some fabulous consulate buildings, this city was used as a bastion by the Brits looking west towards India, and the Soviets, thought to be plotting to absorb Xinjiang.

Total area is 16.2 square kilometers.

Geographic Info

Located at the western border region of the motherland. The east is near the Takla Makan big desert, south depends on Karokunlun Mountains, with the neighbor of  Tibet Ali area, west depends on the Pamirs plateau, with the borders of Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Pakistan, Afghanistan and India, north be joined with Tianshan , the Xinjiang Kirghiz Kirgiz autonomous prefecture and the Akesu area.

Shopping

In Kashgar, the best area to shop is around the streets near Id Kah Square. Good quality carpets can be found in the shops on the streets heading north from the square. A complete array of carpets, many rough looking and with simple designs reflect the less well-known culture of the nomads around this area. Prices here are about one third of those in Turkey.

Dress is supposed to be succinct and natural. Puts on the long-sleeve clothes as often as possible. Avoids the skin undressing in sunlight for long time.
